Recipe | Christmas vanilla cookies

Here’s my attempt at some festive baking! A selection of lovely vanilla biscuits with some cute decorations.

I found the basic recipe for these biscuits at BBC Good Food.

Of course, how many biscuits this mixture makes depends on the size of your cutter and how thickly you roll the dough. The original recipe said these quantities would make 20 biscuits, but I made 60!

Recipe | Chocolate Butterfly Cakes

These are cute, delicious and easy to make! Growing up we called them “butterfly buns” but today I guess they’d be “cupcakes”?

Recipe | Easy yoghurt cake

Possibly the easiest, no-mess recipe I know. You can use any flavour yoghurt you like – I used strawberry this time.

A note on spelling. The most-common spelling of the word in Britain is apparently still “yoghurt”. I cling to thing to this spelling, even though it seems “yogurt” is slowly taking over!

Recipe | Caramel smiley face biscuits

Caramel biscuits cookies face decoration with crimped piping buttercream hair

I had a lot of pink buttercream left over from my mini rosette vanilla cupcakes. So I came up with these to use it up. My son helped my roll and cut out the dough, but the decorating needed my steady hands (I gave him his own to go mad on!)

Ingredients (makes 12 – 15 biscuits depending on the size of your cutter)

Recipe | Red velvet cake with white chocolate buttercream icing

Yesterday, in celebration of World Baking Day 2015 (who knew?!), I tried to make red velvet cake. For my first ever attempt, the cake turned out great – fluffy and delicious – but sadly, not very red.

As you can see from the pictures, the cake has a reddish tinge, but it’s not the deep red I was hoping for. This was entirely my fault. I didn’t read the recipe properly when buying red food dye and so didn’t buy enough – turns out you need A LOT.

Anyway, it still tastes great!

Pretty vanilla biscuits

I decided to move on from cake to biscuits to give myself an excuse for some decorating 🙂

biscuits 1

This is the first time I’ve used royal icing to decorate biscuits and I hope to get better with practice!

Here are the ingredients for the basic biscuit mix I used. This will make about 30 biscuits. We got 31 out of it!
