Recipe | Chocolate hazelnut button slice

A similar texture to a shortbread, a slice of this chocolate hazelnut biscuit is perfect with a cup of tea and the chocolate buttons make it extra child-friendly

Another easy recipe I found on GoodtoKnow which is very child-friendly.

The finished biscuit tastes a lot like a shortbread, although it’s not as crumbly and has a lovely chocolate hazelnut flavour. The chocolate buttons with sprinkles (also called jazzies, jazzles, freckles and the large white buttons I used are apparently called snowies) are optional, but do make the biscuit look more exciting!

Ingredients (makes 15-30 slices of chocolate hazelnut slice)

  • 185 g / 6.5 oz butter (at room temperature) or baking margarine
  • 220 g / 7.8 oz chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 75 g / 2.6 oz soft brown sugar
  • 250 g / 8.8 oz plain flour
  • At least 100 g (3.5 oz) of jazzies, depending on how closely you want to place them

Method

Preheat your oven to 160 degrees C (140 degrees C fan)/ 320 degrees F / Gas Mark 3.

Line a baking tin with greaseproof baking paper. My rectangular tin measures 18 x 32 x 2.5 cm (7 x 12.5 x 1 inches). The original recipe recommends a 20 x 30 cm (8 x 12 in).

If you have electric hand beaters or a stand mixer, use it to beat together the butter, sugar and chocolate hazelnut spread. If not, make sure the butter is soft before attempting to stir the ingredients together by hand. Add half of the flour and mix in, then the other half (this is just to reduce the risk of the flour billowing everywhere when the mixer starts).

Spoon the dough into the tin and use a spatula or back of a spoon to spread it out evenly.

Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and push the jazzies/buttons into the top of the traybake while it’s still hot.

Leave to cool in the tin for at least 10 minutes before removing and transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling. When fully cool, slice.

If you store the chocolate hazelnut slice in an airtight container in a cool, dry place it should keep for 5-7 days. But, like nearly all baked treats, it will be nicest if eaten as soon as possible after baking.
