Recipe | Malteser chocolate biscuit bars (no bake!)

Maltesers, dark and white chocolate, plus crushed biscuit. The sweetest of no-bake treats!

I got the original recipe from allrecipes but made a couple of tweaks to it. A very easy no-bake option for fans of Maltesers with a very sweet tooth.

  • 150 g / 5.3 oz butter or baking margarine.
  • 4 tablespoons golden syrup
  • 340 – 350 g / 12 – 12.3 oz digestive biscuits, crushed (use to the nearest whole biscuit when weighing out)
  • 200 g / 7 oz dark chocolate
  • 300 g / 10.5 oz Maltesers (approx.)
  • 200 g / 7 oz white chocolate for the topping (optional).

Line your baking tin or other container with greaseproof (baking) paper or tin foil. I used my brownie pan which measures 24 x 20 x 4 cm (9.5 x 8 x 1.5 inches).

Crush the digestive biscuits. If you have a food processor you can whizz them up in it. I put the biscuits into a deep bowl and used the end of a rolling pin to crush them. You don’t have to get them to a perfect powder – a few bigger bits won’t hurt.

Break your chocolate into pieces and melt in the microwave for a minute in two 30-second bursts, stirring between bursts. Add the butter/ margarine to the chocolate and give the mix another 30 seconds in the microwave. Stir to encourage melting and the ingredients to combine. Add the golden syrup and return the bowl to the microwave for another 20-second burst. If you need to, give the mixture additional 20-second bursts, stirring well in between until all the ingredients have melted and combined into a smooth, glossy mixture.

Alternatively, you can put the chocolate, butter and syrup in a glass or Pyrex bowl and heat it over a pan of hot water.

Add the chocolate mixture to your crushed biscuits and stir until all the biscuits are coated in chocolate. Add nearly all the Maltesers (keep a few back) and stir through. Spoon the mixture into your tin and flatten it down well using the back of a spoon or spatula. At this point, I pressed a few extra Maltesers into the mixture, just to make sure they were well distributed.

Melt the white chocolate (microwave or pan method as described above), pour and spread over the top of the Maltesers chocolate biscuit bar mixture. You could use less white chocolate and just drizzle it over the top rather than pouring a solid layer.

Put in the fridge for at least 2 hours. When set, remove from the fridge and use a sharp knife to slice as you like.

Your Malteser chocolate biscuit bars will keep for a week in an air-tight container stored in a cool, dry place. Good luck making them last that long!
