Go on! Overload with chocolate for Valentine’s Day!

You don’t really need a recipe to make chocolate bark because it’s as straightforward as you would expect. Melt chocolate, pour it out, sprinkle with the toppings of your choice, leave to set and that’s it!

I decided to put some oreo biscuit in the base of mine for flavour and a nice crunchy texture. I used Love Hearts, mini Haribo hearts and some heart-shaped sugar sprinkles for the topping, but you can use your favourites.

Ingredients (these quantities make a lot of chocolate bark! The pictures below will give you an idea of just how much. You could halve these amounts if you want to make a small batch)

  • 400 g / 14 oz milk chocolate (or plain or dark chocolate: choose your favourite)
  • 400 g / 14 oz white chocolate
  • Approx. 50 g / 2 oz pink strawberry chocolate (optional – for decoration. You could also dye white choc pink and add flavouring). I got my pink choc by buying pink chocolate mice in pick and mix and chopping them up!
  • Approx. 10 oreos (the flavour of your choice)
  • Haribo mini hearts, love hearts, sprinkles, whatever you like!

Method

Line a baking tray with greaseproof baking paper – stick it to the tray using a little butter/margarine.

Roughly crush your oreos/other biscuits of your choice and lay them, filling side up, on your tray. I used mint oreos and strawberry oreos. In this pictures the strawberry oreos are on the left and mint on the right. I placed my oreo pieces close together but you could leave bigger gaps if you only want the odd piece in your chocolate bark.

Break your milk chocolate into pieces. Put in a heatproof bowl and melt. You can do this by putting your bowl over a pan of heated water or use the microwave. If you use the microwave, go gently. Zap the chocolate for a minute first. Take the bowl out and stir the chocolate. Put it back in for another 30 seconds. This will usually be enough. You can use the heat of the chocolate which has already melted to melt the rest. Zap again for another few seconds if needs be.

Pour the milk chocolate over the oreo biscuit base. Use the back of a spoon or spatula to spread the chocolate evenly.

Put this first layer in the fridge to chill for ten minutes. Be careful not to leave it in there any longer or the chocolate will have completely set and may not bond with the white chocolate layer.

Melt your white chocolate. Pour over the milk chocolate layer and spread evenly.

If you want to include the strawberry pink chocolate swirl, melt the pink chocolate and drizzle over your white chocolate layer.

Drag a cocktail stick, skewer or knife tip through the pink lines to make patterns, like so:

Add sweets of your choice to decorate. I put mini Haribo hearts on the left to remind me which side had the strawberry oreos in it, and Love Hearts on the right.

Put your oreo chocolate bark in the fridge to set for about an hour. The finished product should look a bit like this:

Now all that’s left it to break the bark into pieces. I just used my hands and it snapped quite easily.

    • I wasn’t sure they’d keep selling them here but it seems to be one of the special flavours which is sticking around. It’d taste great with the original flavour though. Or maybe there’s a local dulce de leche sandwich biscuit you could use…mmm… πŸ™‚

      • They do have the strawberry one here so that’s something… There are mint chocolate medals though that work really well as a replacement though when mixed with original oreos. πŸ˜‰
