Entertaining, although not as dark as I’d expected. 3.5/5.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for providing me with an e-copy of this book.
The blurb: Mara has become used to the extraordinary. Roaming from place to place with Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Carnival, she longs for an ordinary life where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future.
She gets her chance when the struggling sideshow sets up camp in the small town of Caudry and she meets a gorgeous local guy named Gabe. But before long, Mara realizes there’s a dark presence lurking in the town that’s threatening the lives of her friends. She has seven days to take control of a power she didn’t know she had in order to save everyone she cares about—and change the future forever.
My take:
Freeks is an entertaining YA story with a diverse cast of likeable characters. In fact, they were all so likeable, I wondered whether the few “baddies” could have done with being a bit darker to balance things up and add to the drama.
I enjoyed the 1980s setting: not only were the period details delightful, but it also made many aspects of the plot more believable (no smart phones to pass round info instantly, for example).
If you’re coming to this book looking for be frightened, I think you’ll be disappointed. I don’t know why, but I was expecting Freeks to be scarier. There are a few creepy and tense moments, but genuine scares are absent. However, while I don’t think this book would scare a younger reader, it’s still solidly YA because of the romance elements and there is one (commendably safe) sex scene.
I also found the pacing to be a little off. The beginning was good, with lots happening quickly, and the middle sustained this pace, but then the resolution felt rushed. So much was packed into the last few chapters they passed in something of a blur, dampening any menace or tension.
I’d recommend this to fans of Twilight, with the added bonus that the romance in Freeks is entirely appropriate and Mara is in no way as drippy as Bella. Also, there’s no love triangle here: another plus. Gabe and Mara’s relationship might be too “insta-love”ish (that’s a word now) for some, but if you’re prepared to suspend your disbelief for humans with various supernatural powers being stalked by a shadowy monster, I think you can also give two teenagers with raging hormones a break.
Overall: Freeks has a promising set-up, great setting and likeable characters, but is lacking in the genuine menace I’d have liked to balance the romantic elements of the plot.

Great review Claire. I still want to read this, but I think I’ll borrow it from the library rather than buying it.💁🏻

Thank you 🙂
It is definitely a borrow rather than buy book. It’s entertaining and fine, but I don’t think it’s one that will stick in the memory. And it was nice to finally come across a book with some likeable characters in it. I seem to have read a lot recently where all the characters are nasty!

I’ve read a couple of books lately where I really couldn’t stand any of the people in it.😕

Hm, I might give this a try if I’m looking for a lighter YA read. Great review by the way!

It would be perfect it that’s what you’re looking for. It’s entertaining and the romance is fine. I did think a few times it would be an ideal book to take on holiday when you’re just looking for something to pass the time.

I’ve actually read the Switched series by Amanda Hocking which I ADORED! Maybe I’ll have to give this a try.

I would like to read her other books because the writing is good. It’s good to hear her series is worth checking out 🙂
I would recommend Freeks to all YA fans who are looking for an entertaining read, it’s just not a life-changing one!

I was tempted to request this, as I love the cover and hoped it would be creepy, but after reading a couple of reviews I decided against it, as seemed more YA and not so scary, which seems to be how you found it too.

That sounds exactly right. Not frightening at all, and I say that as someone who is scared by her own shadow! 🙂

Ha ha, I would normally say I’m not easily scared, but I did in fact jump at my own shadow last night. Gave myself a right fright!

Great review! A shame about the lack of creepy, the pace and the romantic ‘imbalance’, but I might still give it a go… Although the Twilight comparation is actually a huge turn off haha. 😉

There were just lots of things that made me think of it. I thought, “Twilight could have been like this if the central romance hadn’t been as creepy/problematic!”.
Oh no! I hope I haven’t put you off by mentioning Twilight

Haha don’t worry I’ll definitely keep it in mind; I understand your comparation. 🙂

I love your reference to Twilight and how she is not as “drippy as Bella” absolutely brilliant, it would take some doing to create another character that bland!! 😂

I know! I found the Twilight saga incredibly addictive, but for once not because of the characters 🙂

Not gonna lie “for fans of Twilight” makes me think I’m gonna skip it… Great review though!

I think it’ll have broader appeal than Twilight (in that it won’t anger anyone), but it did remind me of Twilight a few times!

Great review. Informative and thoughtful. It’s not easy to review a book you’ve didn’t enjoy 100%

Thank you. I always try hard to do every book justice. I never want to put anyone off something they could well enjoy far more than I did, particularly when a book has a lot going for it but didn’t quite “hit home” with me.

Exactly. All books are not for all readers. Sometimes it’s not the right time to read a book either, so when you read it at a later date, you think, ‘why didn’t I enjoy it when i started it last year’. Reading is so personal. I don’t review books I disiked. I’m a bit of a coward. I know the writer will have a hard time, and my opinion is totally subjetive. I thought you did it very nicely me though:)
