An excellent second installment in an ambitious, creative series. 4/5.
The short blurb to avoid spoilers for book 1 in the series: Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.
My take:
This is a difficult book to review without including spoilers for book 1 of the series, the terrific Illuminae. If you’d like to know about that, please read my review here. The short version is that I only gave five books 5 stars in 2015, and Illuminae was one of them.
Though I can’t say much, I’m delighted to say I enjoyed Gemina almost as much as book 1.
I didn’t warm to the new set of characters we meet in this book as much as those in book 1, but they’re still an engaging bunch and you care about them enough to keep turning the pages to see if they’ll survive.
This is one reason why I’ve rated the book slightly lower than book 1. The other reason is that the formatting, which I felt was only occasionally irritating in book 1, goes further in book 2 and actually impeded my ability to read the story several times. I’m all for originality in storytelling and formatting, but I don’t want to be yanked out of immersion in the story because I’m having to turn the book round in circles or get out a magnifying glass to read the text.
I have to give the authors points for their skillful handling of a plot which is complex in the first two-thirds of the book before becoming truly mind-bending in the final third.
Overall: not quite as thrilling or gripping as book 1, but still very good. I can’t wait to see what Kaufman and Kristoff come up with for book 3!

great review, Claire! i love that you mentioned the ‘difficulty’ keeping track because I think that’s exactly the thing that would irritate me as well π i think the book format has been the main thing holding me back from jumping on that particular train π

In the first book it wasn’t too bad. I think there were only 2 times when I thought, “Oh come on guys! Help me out here!” But with this one that went up to over 5 times… I understand they’re trying to do something different, which is great, but if it makes it near impossible to read, that’s no good π¦

Oh that’s great news! I will definitely have to get a paper copy of Gemina now… I made the BIG mistake of getting the kindle version of Illuminae and it was practically unreadable, but you definitely convinced me I need to give in and read Gemina anyway.

You will definitely need the paperback copy of Gemina. There are several times when you need to view the two facing pages at the same time, which would be impossible on Kindle.
It’s very good π I just can’t imagine what they’re going to come up with for book 3!

I can definitely understand that, because Illuminae was hopeless as a kindle as well. A lot of pages were just unreadable on my kindle and I ended up having to read it on my computer, which was really uncomfortable. I’m definitely going to try and get a copy of both though. π

I did not know there was a book 3 on the way! π I guess as I haven’t even started the series, I might as well wait a little longer to get more books to read at once!

That’s a good idea π Although, as they tell different, but connected stories, neither of the books ends on a cliffhanger, which is great π
