1. What I’m reading at the moment
When She Was Bad by Tammy Cohen
Another NetGalley request after seeing lots of positive reviews. Blimey, this is dark stuff. I’ll need another month off from thrillers after this!
The blurb:Β You see the people you work with every day. But what can’t you see?
Amira, Sarah, Paula, Ewan and Charlie have worked together for years – they know how each one likes their coffee, whose love life is a mess, whose children keep them up at night. But their comfortable routine life is suddenly shattered when an aggressive new boss walks in…
Now, there’s something chilling in the air. Who secretly hates everyone? Who is tortured by their past? Who is capable of murder?
2. The last books I read
The Reader on the 6.27 by Jean-Paul Didierlaurent
This is a lovely short read for all book lovers π The perfect thing if you’ve just read something long and hard-going. Here’s my full review.
The blurb: Guylain Vignolles lives on the edge of existence. Working at a book pulping factory in a job he hates, he has but one pleasure in life …Sitting on the 6.27 train each day, Guylain recites aloud from pages he has saved from the jaws of his monstrous pulping machine. And it’s this release of words into the world that starts our hero on a journey that will finally bring meaning into his life. For one morning, Guylain discovers the diary of a lonely young woman: Julie. A woman who feels as lost in the world as he does. As he reads from these pages to a rapt audience, Guylain finds himself falling hopelessly in love with their enchanting author…
AND
Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith
I’m pleased to report that I found this better in some important ways than the previous two books in the series. Unfortunately, like its predecessors, it’s still unnecessarily long. Here’s my full review.
The blurb:Β When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a womanβs severed leg.
Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible β and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality.
With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them…
3. What I’ll read next
The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss
I’ve only seen incredibly positive reviews for the first two books of this series and my library had a copy, so I’m going to give it a go π
The blurb:Β Told in Kvothe’s own voice, this is the tale of the magically gifted young man who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen. The intimate narrative of his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-ridden city, his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, and his life as a fugitive after the murder of a king form a gripping coming-of-age story unrivaled in recent literature. A high-action story written with a poet’s hand, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that will transport readers into the body and mind of a wizard.
Have you read/are reading any of these? What are you reading? Let me know! π
And elsewhere on the blog…
Last week I made ice cream cone cakes. Vanilla cake baked into flat-bottomed ice cream cones, topped with a swirl of buttercream, sugar sprinkles and a chocolate flake.
Claire Huston / Art and Soul
I told everyone about that cake, I am now forced to try it very soon, haha.
Good luck with The Name of The Wind. The book is too big for me to even think about giving it a go for the moment. I am tired just looking at it!
I love the office atmosphere of When She Was Bad. I haven’t read it yet but all the reviews I read praised the way the author turned it into the perfect hell offices can become.
Happy reading!

Compared to Outlander, The Name of the Wind looks short π Particularly because the text is a decent size and the chapters are fairly short, thank goodness.
That is exactly what the author manages to convey in When She Was Bad. It’s just awful and so realistic. Anyone who has ever worked in an office will recognise some of the worst aspects of that working environment. I’m definitely going to need another break from dark thrillers after this one.
Happy reading!

The Galbraith books are all good (I’d expect no less from JK!), but I do wonder whether the editors are scared to edit her π I know I would be!
I’ve only seen the highest praise for The Name of the Wind on other blogs, so I’m really hopeful that investing a lot of time in such a long book (and series!) will be worth it π

If you don’t mind experiencing the hostile office atmosphere, then I can recommend When She Was Bad. I think it’s proving a bit too claustrophobic for me but then I’m a wimp and have to pace myself to one thriller a month! π
The Reader on the 6.27 is a lovely book that starts off gloomy, but leaves you smiling.
I’m off to visit your post now…

There is nothing I hate more than books that are too long just for the sake of it! I think The Goldfinch by Donna Tarrt is the perfect example of this.
When She Was Bad sound intriguing – looking forward to reading your review!

I still haven’t read The Goldfinch. I seem to remember feeling really let down by The Secret History (which probably wasn’t its fault really. A few of my friends had read it and sold it to me as “the best book ever ever ever”, so it was bound to let me down) and with The Goldfinch being as long as it is… well, it doesn’t encourage me π

Love the sound of When She Was Bad, bad things in everyday common places (rubs hands together!!). I read Dying for Christmas by Tammy Cohen which was really very good with one of THE best twists….no shame plot spoiler sorry π
I still haven’t read The Silkworm yet so who knows when I’ll get to book 3; I seem to read them at least a year after everyone else π

Oh yes, you would like When She Was Bad very much! haha! Plus, you’ve worked in an office environment so you would recognise some of the little details which make it all more believable.
I’ve had Dying for Christmas on my TBR since the end of last year. I think I’m saving it for later this year when I’ve had enough of all the Christmas build-up and need something darker.
It feels quite nice to be up to date with a series for once. The one that’s bugging me at the moment is the Robert Bryndza series. Everyone is reading The Night Stalker and I haven’t got to The Girl in the Ice yet… *sigh*

Another one for the wish list then π
I’m not up to date with ANY series I’ve started…I’m so easily distracted and to go and buy all the ones I need would cost a fortune. I need to get them when they’re on Kindle deals…

Ooh, good luck with Name of the Wind! I know I should read it at some point but I get very intimidated by books of that size. Maybe if I read the ebook and can’t tell how many pages I’ve got left, it might be easier…
LikeLiked by 1 person
I thought that too! I got it from the library and I’ve been looking at it thinking, “Err… so long!!!”. I’ve had good previous experiences with reading long books on my Kindle: Winter and A Court of Thorns and Roses being two that spring to mind. It really helped with Winter, which I think is over 800 pages!

The Name of the Wind is an amazing book, the pages fly by even though it’s a hefty tome, really enjoyable, definitely a high 4 – 5 star book, for me though the sequel is slightly dissapointing, a couple of sections really drag on with nothing happening but it’s still good overall. Name of the Wind is awesome though, I hope you enjoy it. π

First of all, a big YES to The Name Of The Wind! That book has to be one of my all time favorite fantasy reads. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did! It’s also good to hear that Career Of Evil is better than the first two, although I’m not sure when I will actually continue the series with the amount of other books I still have to read haha. When She Was Bad sounds good, but I think I will refrain from requesting it right now since I have been reading way too many mystery/thrillers since I signed up for Netgalley. π Have a great week!

I’ve been wanting to read Name of the Wind for so long, but I hate waiting years for books – a 1 yr wait is long enough, thanks. So I’ll wait until there’s a publication date for the final book in the trilogy and then start reading the series.
I dislike getting burned out on genres, but I know it happens for a reason and I should listen to and accept it. Hopefully you find some other good books before going back to dark thrillers.

I know what you mean. I was looking into a publication date for the 3rd book yesterday and apparently it seems to be stuck in a similar situation to the Game of Thrones series… it’s a while since book 2 was published and no-one has any idea when book 3 is on its way. I’m enjoying Book 1 so far but I’ll put book 2 off until there’s a publication date for book 3.
