Cute shredded wheat cereal chocolate nests. A nice Easter recipe to make with children and a great excuse for more chocolate mini eggs!
This is another quick, no bake recipe which is incredibly child friendly. It’s also a perfect spring or Easter “bake” and another excuse to use mini eggs! ๐
Ingredients (makes 7 – 10 chocolate nests depending on the size of your cake cases and how generous you are!)
- 150 g / 5 oz chocolate of your choice. I used dark chocolate because that’s what I had in the cupboard.
- 3 tablespoons golden syrup
- 50 g / 1.5 oz butter/ margarine
- 100 g / 3.5 oz shredded wheat cereal
- Cadbury’s mini eggs or any other chocolate eggs of your choice!
Method
Get your cupcake or bun cases out and ready. I put them into a baking tray to help them keep their shape, but you don’t have to do this.
Put your shredded wheat cereal into a bowl. I don’t know if the cereal known as “Shredded Wheat” here in the UK is widely available worldwide… It should be because it’s made by Nestlรฉ but, just in case you need to find a substitute, it looks like this:
Crumble the shredded wheat cereal into small strands until it looks like this:
Snap the chocolate into small pieces and put in the microwave for a minute in two 30-second bursts, stirring between bursts. Add the butter/ margarine and put back in the microwave for another 30 seconds. Give the mixture another stir to encourage the ingredients to combine. Add the golden syrup and put the mixture back in the microwave for a further 20 seconds. Give the mixture a good final stir, making sure all the chocolate has melted and the ingredients have combined to form a smooth, shiny mixture like the one you can see in this picture:
You could also put the chocolate, butter and golden syrup in a Pyrex or glass bowl and heat it over a pan of hot water.
Pour the chocolate mixture onto the shredded wheat cereal and stir until all the cereal is covered in the chocolate mix. I put a dessertspoonful of the mixture into each cupcake cake and used a teaspoon to make a small well in the middle of each shredded wheat nest. Now put two or three mini eggs into this well. Put the chocolate shredded wheat nests into the fridge to set.
The next photo also features a lovely Lindt bunny…just because!

Thank you! I’m not a fan of the cereal but, strangely enough, really like with when covered in chocolate and syrup ๐

A very clever idea and they look so pretty! This is the kind of way I like to get my fibre. ๐ Oh and in Canada it’s called Shredded Wheat too!

I hoped they’d be Shredded Wheat everywhere. Nestle is one of those enormous companies. I imagine you can buy them on islands in the middle of the Pacific ๐
Adding the chocolate and syrup does indeed improve the taste ๐

Thank you! This was a good recipe for my 3 year old and me. Just mixing and scooping required. A bit tricky to stop him eating the mini eggs though! ๐

And a lovely one to make with children because it’s safe… possibly quite messy, but at least there’s no worry about the oven, stove or knives.

You always make the cutest things and it makes me want to make them as well. Sadly, I have no baking or decorating skills whatsoever and I can’t even make macaroni and cheese without burning it (which makes for a very sad life…)
Maybe one day I can make something from your blog! ๐

You can’t go wrong with this (she says, confidently!). Just use 20-second blasts of the microwave to melt the chocolate, then butter and that’s basically it! ๐

Sounds easy enough (until I completely ruin everything. :P) I’ll give it a shot and see how it turns out! ๐
