This meme is hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words. A similar meme, This Week in Books is hosted by Lipsyy Lost and Found.
Why not join in? Just answer the following three questions in a post and then put a link to that post in the Comments over at Taking on a World of Words.
The questions are:
- What are you currently reading?
- What did you recently finish reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
1. What I’m reading at the moment
More Than This by Patrick Ness
I took the weekend “off” from reading after getting through Winter in two days (it’s nearly 900 pages!). Even so, I’ve made good progress on More Than This this week and hope to finish tonight or tomorrow morning. So far, I don’t love it as much as A Monster Calls or Chaos Walking, but it’s very good.
The blurb: A boy drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments. He dies. Then he wakes, naked and bruised and thirsty, but alive. How can this be? And what is this strange deserted place? As he struggles to understand what is happening, the boy dares to hope. Might this not be the end? Might there be more to this life, or perhaps this afterlife?
2. The last books I read
24 Hours by Claire Seeber
Sadly, I failed to connect with the main character and so didn’t enjoy this as much as I’d hoped. Here’s my full review.
The blurb: Here today. Dead tomorrow?
My best friend, Emily, is dead – killed last night in a hotel fire.
But it was meant to be me.
Now I have 24 hours to find my daughter.
Before he finds out I’m still alive.
24 Hours is a fast-paced, intelligent psychological thriller that will leave you breathless.
AND
Winter by Marissa Meyer
I’m so pleased to be able to say the final installment in The Lunar Chronicles was as much fun as the rest of the series. Very long, but highly entertaining. Here’s my full review.
What it’s about: This is the fourth and final installment of the Lunar Chronicles series. If you’d like to know more, check out my review of Books 1-3: Cinder, Scarlet and Cress.
3. What I’ll read next
I have a couple of things on request from the library. I’ll read whatever comes in first! If neither of these come in, I’ll just have to hunt out some alternatives 🙂
The Bones of You by Debbie Howells
What it’s about: A stunning, wonderfully assured psychological thriller that evokes Gillian Flynn and Alice Sebold, The Bones of You revolves around a young girl’s murder and one woman’s obsession with uncovering the secrets in an idyllic English village.
AND
The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness
The blurb: What if you aren’t the Chosen One? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?
What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.
Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life. Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions.
Have you read/are reading any of these? What are you reading? Let me know! 🙂
You can also find me on Twitter @ClaraVal and on Goodreads.
Not exactly an “easy” bake last week, but it was my son’s 3rd birthday and he loves cars, so I made him a cake shaped like a car!
I’m glad Winter ended the series well and that you were happy with how it ended, I’m not surprised you needed a little break from reading after getting through 900 pages in two days. The Bones of You sounds really good, I’m going to add that to my list.
The cake you made is brilliant, I bet your son loved it!

Thank you! The cake turned out far better than I had hoped. I think the choice of red fondant really helped.
I put The Bones of You on my TBR after seeing lots of positive comments from other bloggers. I just hope it comes into the library soon 🙂
I’ll check out your post now…

Wow – you are busy! Any time for writing or baking?

Don’t worry! I’m fitting it all in at the moment… Might have to ease off on the reading for a while though!

You mean reading three books rather than 5? lol

Did you get to read the latest pieces of my sthort stories?

I did! I was relieved the scientists receiving the signal from the probe orbiting Pluto were allowed to go free at the end. I was slightly worried the man from the government and his “foreign friends” were going to lock the doors and kill them all! (he was a very shifty character and didn’t seem too concerned about getting rid of anyone who got in his way).

Yes, but the story isn’t finished yet… His foreign friends were very shifty and of course we have no idea where they were from 😉

I’m going to get a copy of A Monster Calls because I’m not sure how it can be better than More Than This lol 😉

A Monster Calls is pretty much perfect. I hope you enjoy it (although it does involve cathartic crying).

I’m not one that usually cries at books so that’ll be a challenge!

I just started the audio of “The Rest of Us Just Live Here” today. It’s got a really interesting format, and I’m not entirely sure what to think of it just yet, but I’ll definitely continue with it. I’ve got my eye on More Than This, too.

I’ve nearly finished More Than This, and while it’s very good (as all P. Ness is), I’m not sure about it…
I hope my library orders come in soon. Otherwise I’ll have to scan the shelves and take pot luck!

Haven’t read any Patrick Ness. Another author I need to look out for I think.

Do, do, do! I hadn’t read anything by him until I read A Monster Calls this summer and now I’m a devoted fan! A Monster Calls is a good place to start as it’s short and brilliant. 🙂

I seriously need to read more Patrick Ness!! His Chaos Walking trilogy is one of my all-time fav YA trilogies, so I Don’t know why I’ve never sought out more of his books! *adds to Christmas List*

I don’t know about you, but my Christmas list is fast getting out of control! I think I’ll just have to buy a bookshop. Or a permanent seat in the library (budget option). 🙂

That cake is so cute!! And I read a bit of your review of Winter, I didn’t read the whole thing in case I got ahead of myself in the series but I can’t wait to get to it!

Thank you!
And I understand what you mean about not wanting to find out anything about books you’re planning to read soon. I’ve had to skip to the end of a few reviews recently (most often Carry On and Illuminae) – I don’t want to see any spoilers!

I just wanted to read the description and see what you rated it lol I bookmarked it to read thoroughly later when I finally get to read Winter though!

I need to read some Patrick Ness and More Than This sounds very interesting.

More Than This is very interesting and it has one of the strongest opening chapters I’ve read in a long time. But it’s not as good as other Ness books – I think he’s set himself an impossibly high standard with Chaos Walking and A Monster Calls! 🙂

I am currently reading Winter and I am so glad everyone seems to have enjoyed it! I enjoyed More Than This as well and I hope you enjoy The Rest of Us Just Live Here.

They’re all very good. Some more than others, but they’re all interesting, entertaining and well-written.

I agree about More Than This. I liked that book, but it wasn’t my favorite Patrick Ness book. I think The Rest of Us Just Live Here was a top favorite of his books. Here’s my post for the week. Happy reading! 😀

I’m so happy to hear that! I’m hoping to read that this week if it ever shows up at the library 🙂

I’ve never read Patrick Ness. Should I pick him up? The car cake is adorable and your son has a great name! Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!

Thank you! Sam is a great name, isn’t it? 😉
And, on the question of whether or not to read Patrick Ness: YES! I only discovered Ness’ work this year and I’ve since made it my mission to read everything he’s written. Some of his books are better than others, but they’re all entertaining, thought-provoking and well-written. I think my downfall was starting with A Monster Calls, which I would bet could be the best thing he ever writes. It’s a near perfect book. Small but wonderful. If I ever find time I’d like to re-read it so I can figure out how he wrote something so apparently simple and yet marvellous.

I enjoyed Winter so much (despite shortage of Thorne – glad I can count you in on the spin-off campaign. I think that makes 5 bloggers behind me so far!).
Thanks for visiting and happy reading 🙂

5 is more than nothing! 😉 Who knows, she might write a novella about Thorne after finishing The Princess And The Guard next year…
